If it wasn't for the Steam conversion of 2004....

I'd still be perm-banned.
I think I may have been part of that clemency act...
or maybe a different act from the deity ...it's been a long time!

Hi - I just wanted to say, I have recently become re-addicted to TFC and am glad to find an active server and community. :)

That is all, thank you.
It's not too late to run! But I've watched you and you'll do well if you stay.

I swore off when Steam took over. My AT386 couldn't handle it. Hard to wean off but I did it. Years later, I'm walking past a gaming parlor in a mall and went in to check if they could load up TFC (this was in the hey-day of CS). After a lot of head-scratching and interdepartmental discussion, they loaded it up. I think this was 2007. Here almost daily ever since. D2F Model Player of the Year four years running now. And for the first time (just found out last week) D2F Admin of the Year for 2020! Four nights/3days all inclusive resort in Playa del Carmen. Sweet.
I was pretty butthurt too about the Steam transition and cutting of WON. If it's any consolation, Steam was buggy to the extent of not working on my mini-tower PC but I could run Doom 3 just fine. I'm a bit of a Luddite myself, I still use a Nokia brick phone circa 2002 as my cell phone. I don't like touch screens and interneting on a smart phone; I need a big screen.

You gave me a nice member berry about gaming parlors and CS. CS was huge when I was in high school in the early 2000s. There was that brief period time when you had to go to an internet cafe to play multiplayer games, particularly shooters, as high speed internet wasn't around/was too expensive. I don't think those are around any more. They were nice in that they provided a more personable and social atmosphere to gaming; I even went to them a couple times even when I had DSL. I went on a brief gaming hiatus in 2006-2007ish. 2007 a friend of mine suggested going to play counter-strike at the local strip mall gaming parlor. Despite having not played in over a year I'm engage in some serious 1337 h4x04 pwn4ge to the extent that some random kid comes up me, shakes my chair and yells, "how are you so good?" I explained that I spent half my waking life in high school playing counter-strike and even made a CS map. It was like I went full circle from being a frustrated n00b being pwnd at the LAN cafe to being the veteran CS player doing the pwning.

@Iggy, ooooh! What'd you do?

there is a spot in Seattle..an arcade/pizza parlor that has the best shit...including comfortable chairs (full back) for only 7.00/hr
I'll admit, I have paid it
It's a different experience...kid goes and plays arcade games, and I go and still suck at tfc :)

Actually, it's not "what *I* did"... it's "what some fucker who was able to access my WON account" did.

I had been playing here for a year or so, and to be honest, I was on dialup, and nowhere near as good as I am these days(or, in other days since then)... but apparently, Drippy- saw someone(during the WON days) using my WON-ID, cheating, so a Perm-ban was issued.

I came here not knowing why I was banned(as I was already a member of the forums under a different name), and asked why I was banned. When he dropped that piece of info on me, obviously I defended myself because I've never cheated in ANY online game in my life. But, the verdict was in.... and there was no changing his mind at the time.

Once the Steam Conversion happened, I came back on and laid low. After seeing my game play, and figuring out who I was previously on WON, Drippy- admitted that I likely wasn't cheating, but had been hacked. I've always maintained my innocence in that, and I'm very grateful that Drippy- gave me another chance.

I was kicking around on IRC the night that Steam launched, pretending that I worked for Valve and had early access to install Steam. I had something like 400 people in the channel with me asking for the release time, then someone ended up messaging me and sending a leaked copy of the installer, at like 4 in the morning... haha. Good times!!

I was also initially upset about Steam since my computer had a tough time handling it.

Ahh the good old days...

Also just found my old screenshots of this:

I couldn't get through the bottleneck the night Steam launched, to have the installer actually connect to register my ID. Eventually I had to give up and zZz to be able to handle college or whatever the next day, and ended up with my 5 digit (33414).

Super envious that you have held onto screens from that old. A few years back, during the process of backing up my files, I wiped all of my old game screens and 2000's memes. Complete opposite of what I was hoping to achieve. Crushed.

College?! Oh my... you're dating yourself.

I was a late Steam adopter and while I had a 5 digit WON ID, I am now forever cursed with this plebian 7 digit Steam ID.

Most of us TFCers be old. =/

Thankfully I'm better than I've ever been, rather than age having gotten the better of me so far. Though I do wonder if my reactions might've been faster if I were still yung. I only rarely manage to best Josh in ass_dm, and he's nearly two decades less a fossil than me.

Definitely a fan of my super low ID, haha. I got hacked once and got a little smarter with the account protection.

I also have some old screenshots from TFC clan matches back in the day showing the scores, and a bunch of Everquest screenshots. It's a lot of fun to go back and check those out sometimes.

Love to see some clan match screen shots. I actually looked at your irc screen shots and I played with one of those fellas.
