Cheap kills seems to be a bit of a controversial subject here, both on the server and the forums, so I'm going to tread lightly. I should also add that as an avid board gamer I'm well acquainted with house rules and respect that institution. I do on occasion argue or just want to discuss these house rules but understand that ultimately the game host makes the rules and you play by those rules... OR ELSE!

Someone posted a video of a spy with enemy disguise on in the enemy sniper spawn shanking freshly spawned players. While I'm almost certain that would be against the rules against cheap kills in the spawn, I nonetheless appreciated the strategy, it was quite clever, and the person whining about it was quite butthurt. I should also add I felt it had more respectability than just throwing a nade up the alcove wall. So that got me thinking, what if cheap kills are part of the game? From a purely strategic view point it makes sense. Another example is throwing a nade towards the 2nd floor spawn near the ramp room as your about to ascend the ramp coming from the ramp room. Maybe you don't kill anyone, maybe you do, and if you do, that eliminates a threat and gets you closer to the flag. Pure unadulterated strategy.

So I'm curious if any TFC veterans here played on servers where "cheap kills in the spawn" were allowed and if that changed the game dynamic and if so was it for the better or the worse? I think it could allow for situations where there's more teamwork. "Oh fuck, we got a guy piping our sniper spawn!" It may also necessitate getting people camping in the basement to help eliminate the spawn camping threat.

'The Gas Chamber' was a nearly anything goes server and was fun as hell to play on.
X-Bots works the same way except you can obviously only be an asshole to the bots. Poor bots :(

But people go to different servers for different reasons. You went to the GC specifically for the mayhem. You go to X-Bots to be a complete sociopath and torture non-sentient opponents. You come to Drippy-s to actually play the game.

I don't think most good players would have any issue dealing with anything in sniper spawn. Home field advantage grants spawning players easy access to health/armor/grenades, they have the turret on their side, better positioning (aggressors are forced to play from kill funnels with one side being an effective dead end), and usually an influx of teammates to help out. Sniper spawn rules exist primarily to safeguard players that have very little idea how to effectively fight. (Though it's also annoying playing O and having to stop to DM in one's spawn, admittedly.) EDIT: Pipetraps at the dropdown are pretty lame though since there's nothing a player could do about it other than use an alternate exit (or I guess waste a nade/conc/whatever to try to quickly boost through it if the demo's slow on the det).

Main spawn is different where the spawning player is at disadvantage getting safely out of the door (though it's also harder to kill them if they're instead playing from within). A good player could still fight their way out against most anything but a quality demo and their pipetraps, but a common problem is players without balls being afraid of death/damage and clogging up the exit. Teammates working together should still be able to brute force themselves out no matter what, but it's certainly a messier and more obnoxious situation than anything on sniper side. Rules to protect main spawn are therefor more necessary in general, for most pub situations.

I was a regular at TGC for the above reason.

Also, regular'd Odin's Graveyard for no OvO and more league type environment.

Are there any servers akin to odins graveyard around these days?

Just coming back from a 16 year break.
Steam account was hacked around 2009.

Kilo was the last name used here at drippys back in 2005.
Also known as bk. or BloodKnight by many in the community.

Ah Odin's Graveyard... loved that server. "Are there any servers akin to odins graveyard around these days?" Unfortunately note. The closest pub server like that is Old School TFC(45.32.203.198:27035) but they only play ADL maps and it's only populated with players late at night.

If cheap kills in the spawn were allowed, what you would see is one team steamroll the other more often than you do now. Same thing when Valve added teleporters to TFC, but not to the same degree.

While it is within the rules of TFC in the sense that the game allows it, it does in my experience not constitute fun gameplay. Killing defenseless people gets old really quickly, and not being able to do anything because leaving the spawn is a chore also gets old really quickly. There is nothing of value to be gained here. People would just play other games instead.

When people get behind the doors where turrets can't do shit...it gets really old...really fast...
ALSO imo, it brings people with 0 intentions of playing CTF...their sole purpose is to grief

This server has survived BECAUSE of the playing style it promotes AND ENFORCES
I'd play COD or DOD (which I also suck at), if it was different, and when it's no longer fun I play TF2

If it is the basement supply you are talking about, I don't mind people chasing in and killing someone fleeing at all. It is only the respawn areas I was talking about. I've played on plenty of servers with no rules, and while fun for a while, it stops losing it's charm fairly quickly. Oh look there are mirv grenades in our spawn every 30 seconds on the dot. Such skill, much wow.

The problem with it is that is boring gameplay.

I was, but as I understand the rules on this server, you are allowed to chase a target and kill it into respawn, as long as you don't touch anyone else. Which is a difficult line to walk, so I never do it. While people hiding in respawn are not enjoying the game to it's fullest, your team can take full advantage of people not defending anything.

In a capture the flag game, people hiding in respawn afraid to do anything, are people who are not resisting you getting their flag.
