There are some pictures in the post..... but otherwise, it reads like this:

A tale of Twelve Cents
(Posted about 4 years ago)

I just hobbled my crippled ass down to the liquor store.

Oh, be quiet. No good story ever started with "So I went into McDonalds and got a salad...."

So... it's about 10:00am, I get dressed, grab my cane, and out the door I go. The walk up there was uneventfull, but it's generally a quiet neighborhood. I get there, grab a 12-pack, and make it to the counter without dropping them. Young girl(say.... early - mid 20's) walks over to ring me up. She gives me my total...... $7.62.

I count out eight $1 bills, reach into my pocket and pull out a dime and two pennies.

This is where the problem starts.

She puts the $8 into the register's screen input, but not the $.12.... it's not that she didn't see the coinage.... she did. It's early morning(for a liquor store), and she looked like she needed a coffee infusion(read: still half asleep).

To be fair, I'm not sure if the issue here is that her fingers operated on their own and only put the $8 into the "keyboard" and automatically entered it as the total tendered, or if the machine isn't properly calibrated to accept "non-linear monetary exchanges"(a number different than a whole dollar, but not the exact change). I suspect the former....

I could see the look on her face.... "It's too early for this shit!"

I heard the words come from her mouth.... "I hate this machine."

The machine, obviously err'd.... it said I was due $.38 in change.

Do you see the problem yet?

At this time, she's starting to breathe hard, and I can see her mind(such as it is) struggling to slip into gear and get this right on the first try. I can hear the conversation in her head...... "I didn't struggle through 13 years of schooling to have to do teh maths THIS EARLY IN THE MORNING!!" "WHY DID THIS ASSHOLE CHOOSE MY REGISTER!!" "WHY IN GOD'S NAME DO PEOPLE DO THIS TO ME!!??"

Putting that $.12 in the little window was quite possibly the most evil thing I could have done to this child. I think she would have preferred to have been kidnapped, chained up in a basement for a decade and raped daily...... rather than have to do "teh maths" at 10:26am(timestamp on the receipt). What kind of a sick evil bastard AM I?!

A slightly older, and possibly wiser, coworker walked over.... shot me a look of disgust that would have made me cower, had I not looked death straight in the face years ago. As if to say, "How dare you abuse this innocent young lady like this!"

Because *I'M THE BAD GUY* here.

Look. I worked in a liquor store for 13 years. I'm the guy that coined the phrase "Anyone that thinks the customer is always right has never had to deal with them." But to be fair, I didn't set out to mess with this girls mind... I didn't walk out of the house this morning saying to myself, "I am going to ruin someone's day by making them do teh maths at this unGodly hour! WOOHOO!" No. That's now how this started. I just wanted quarters I could put in my arcade games. And beer. Beer was at the top of the list, but getting quarters as my change was second on the list. Messing with a young mind wasn't on the agenda.

It was just a bonus. }:)

(insert image of "Customer is always tojhy z
meme)

The older cashier(sorry, I hate the term "Clerk") points at the bin with the quarters in it, the younger girl pulls two of them out, slaps them into the little spinny window, puts the receipt and the bag with the beer in it in there, spins it around, and doesn't say a word or look in my direction.

I hate to say it, but I'm used to that kind of treatment there. They always act like you should be thankful that they are serving you there. I would go elsewhere, but I'd rather deal with a "you're bothering me" attitude than being ripped off. Besides, it's the only liquor store close enough for my crippled ass to walk to.

I slid the quarters and receipt into my pocket, pulled the bag out of the spinny bit, smiled, and said "Thank you, I'll be sure to have a nice day. You do the same!" and hobbled out the door.

Okay, so NOW I was intentionally being an asshole.

I get it. I've dealt with the public for years. I know they can be a pain in the ass. It's one of the reasons I try to NOT be a problem. I'm also a pretty jovial guy. I always joke with the cashiers at the Dollar store, the grocery store, etc. I try to be the one smile they get during their day. Much like I used to joke with the customers when I was serving them.

All this.... because I wanted quarters to put in my arcade games. Not that I actually *NEED* to, mind you. It just adds to the experience. My games either have a credit switch(Super Pac-Man and Dig Dug), or works on tokens(Lunar Lander). There's just something about putting that coin in, and playing.

That was a few years ago, and it was Natural Ice. I want to say that was back in 2016, but I could be off by a year in either direction.

I always keep change on me & ideally try to make it even dollars in change, but sometimes its just less coins. If someone is too stupid to do math (or its just not their best subject) then they shouldn't be working a cash register.

On that 'best subject' thing, its OK to have strengths & weaknesses. My wife is better socially than I am, but I'm much better at math & spelling. But don't be a cashier if you aren't good at math.
