Hi guys,
Was just playing a game and there was a sniper that seemed pretty quick with the trigger. He was getting some great shots on myself and others. A few of us were wondering if he was hacking, so I made a demo. Let me know what you think. I don't spec too often, but doesn't spec show the sniper zoom? It didn't zoom with this guy. Case in point: at the very end, G~Man is being spectated and it showed his zoom. His name was "DOOIV!" - can't seem to find his steam ID.
Demo Link:
https://www.dropbox.com/s/5brq3rrm3gwtv22/hack.dem?dl=0 It's kicks up about 30 seconds in.

He's posted demos of him playing before, his zoom never shows up because of the way he does it in scripts.

That was me. I record demos randomly, but didn't have one going for that round, so when I heard ppl questioning me I'm glad someone recorded it. I definitely don't hack, and I've always played strictly by league and competitive rules (as well as server rules, obviously). But I certainly understand why it could look that way (especially as Sniper) without understanding the zoom issue or without closer examination of my aim.
When I posted the demo for my whining ban last week or whatever, I posted a demo when I was Sniper as well, and that's when I learned for the first time in my entire TFC career that default_fov changes don't show up in demos. I told Gaba how shocked I was to find that out, even though when I really stop to think about it it's painfully obvious that it wouldn't. But yeah, like a ton of competitive TFC players (including many on the server), I use a higher default_fov in general (120). For sniping, I have a toggle to switch it to default_fov 40 (and lower my sens). A lot of people simply use the "fov" command for custom zooms, but it's impacted by lag rather than being entirely client-side like the default zoom. It does in fact piss me off that it doesn't show up even in demos (I knew it doesn't normally show up in spectate, but a lot of competitive servers used to have a plugin that would automatically adjust itself in spectate to the default_fov of the player exactly for this reason; I could try to track that down, if drippy cared enough to add it, and then you'll see a bunch of players with their custom default_fovs). Valve specifically left the commands open for HLDM and TFC, since they knew a lot of players like to adjust their FOV manually (isn't it in the same in TF2 even now?), and it's always been legal in league and competitive TFC (and I figured drippy didn't have a problem with it since I've seen screenshots posted in the community with 110~130). So that's the zooming issue. You can make a default_fov toggle and manually change it every time you assume I'm zooming while watching the demo, to better gauge the aimbot accusation.
As for aimbot, I could draw squigleys of my aim (right Gaba) and I doubt it would look suspiciously artificial. Most of the shots I land are due to prediction and I'm usually pretty "slow" and deliberate with my aim (compared to the high sens or snap speed by a lot of other players, or the CS pros who can snap their arm 2 feet with their ultra-low sens and land perfect headshots at any distance), and I plant my dots on walls for quicker reactions whereas other snipers go through the pretense of hiding them (if it keeps a sniper hiding behind a wall, I'm fine with that as it helps the team). My snap aim is also definitely improving since I upgraded to a Deathadder Chroma with low DPI/sens, all acceleration disabled, and a 17" Razer mousepad, so I'm quickly getting used to the exact distances I can snap accurately (and my snaps are always one smooth motion, so I highly doubt you'll be able to point to any auto-correcting that could be attributed to an aimbot). And I miss plenty of shots (painfully easy ones, quite often, which you'll probably see me react to in the demo), and the speed and accuracy of my aim will look the same either way, whether I'm hitting, missing, firing rockets (except that my rocket prediction and general soldieryness is still rather rusty), etc.
I acknowledge that my aim is sometimes really, really good, and I certainly expect accusations like this occasionally (I've certainly made some of my own in the past, lol...), but I can assure you it's entirely legit.
EDIT: I thought you would have had more of the match with some of the more impressive shots. Watching the demo, 90% of those hits I already had my dot in position, including where I accurately predicted the height of that Medic's flubbed water conc. All the other Medic hits from deck are easy shots for any half-decent Sniper with decent hit-registration, as there was no evasion utilized at all (same with the 2 hits where I couldn't finish off the Med before he landed in water). I had one really good shot while I was aiming up and to the right IIRC when the bottom left Sniper missed me, and I was able to emergency snap and nail his leg. Woulda been too late if he had landed his own shot. Otherwise it was pretty run of the mill stuff, IMO.

Thanks for the explanation, Spoof. I guess the answer is "really good sniper" and not hacker? :P

Not to be nit-picky..... because I support grabbing a demo of any suspicious play. But....
After you start recording, pull down your console and pull up the player list(status). Highlight their Steam ID, Alt-Tab out of the game(the demo will still be recording), come here and go to the Stats/Ranks page, and put the ID in.
No matter what name someone is playing under, it will show you who it is. That way, when you come here to make a post about it, you can name the player in question by their common name. Anyone can use any name on the server itself(well, except "Ralphy" or "Drippy-"). It's the Steam ID that verifies who is actually playing.
Oh, another reason to use the Status command in the console at the beginning of the demo: It adds their Steam ID to the recording itself. If you want to see the console recording of the demo, load it up and start viewing it, return to console and type "condump". The transcript will be saved as a text file.

Thanks Iggy, noted. I'm a noob when it comes to making demos. I've very rarely made them before, so that info is necessary. As far as the Steam ID, I suppose I should have put more effort into grabbing that. What Spoofer said about the FOV, etc. is new to me. I had no idea. It's amazing that TFC still holds surprises after playing it since inception.

Honestly, I never knew about the FOV thing either. I use default, and often forget that others don't. I've tried it at those crazy settings, but they really throw my movement off.
Spoofer's explanation was pretty eye opening. I'm also glad I could help you with recording pertinent information. You can never have "too much" info. :)

The reference to Biden's casual racism was unintentional. In no way did I mean to imply that spoofer is African-American.

I would rarely hear much about what Biden ever had to say unless he was being taken to task for it. By ignoring the dozens of times he's been blasted for blunders, I can see how that can lend credence to the argument that he hasn't been.
