| Prelude to Agony wrote: Maybe it's not everywhere...maybe places are like, fuck it, minimum wage, that's it. I don't know, and I really don't know what goes on in the big city (which, again, is why issues with cops there confound me). What I do know, around here anyway, there are options and not everyone settles...if they want more, they go look for it. Sorry. | | I'm breaking this out of the other thread, that has morphed into a debate about minimum wage(which is fine, that's how conversations go), but this was brought up, so let's take the time to CIVILY talk with our "law enforcement officer"(whom I only know through this site, but DO believe is honest. So let's keep it respectful).
I do think that PTA, as well as several police that I know both IRL and online, truly don't understand "what the problem is" when it comes to the disconnect between "law enforcement" and "the communities they serve".
So, let's talk about it.
I have to get ready for a doctor's appointment, so I'll post my thoughts on things after I get back home. But let's see who says what until I do.

You misunderstand...I do understand what's going on and 'what the problem is'. What I don't get is how it's been allowed to happen in other areas, but I'm not seeing that here.

Cops aren’t social workers.

No, but we're expected to be, which is a problem.
It's not really a problem to send cops to cases like that, but the issues I've had personally, is the lack of support from Mental Health. It'd be great if we had a support 'unit' that would go with us....but people want to get paid.
I mean, when you spend an hour or so talking to someone and get them to voluntarily go to the hospital (requirement here) for eval, but then you can't get a fucking mental health worker...it sucks.
In the 26 years I've been doing this, we still haven't figured out a good system to get people the help they need. I've talked to so many folks over the years, it's not a big deal, it's easy to sit and listen....but what is a big deal is that we only seem to get them the help they want/need a small portion of the time.
The definition of helpless is having a family furious with you when it's literally not your fault that the people that could help their loved one....won't. But they expect you to make that happen...

Sorry guys, doctor appointment didn't go as it should have. I *WILL* get into the conversation when I can, but despite the topic being down here in WC..... I would like to keep it as civil as possible. Aight?

Good luck with that, Iggy.

Is this thread FOR or AGAINST raising the federal minimum wage? Or Star Wars? Can't tell.

FOR, of course. One of Bill Clinton's first acts in office was to raise MW. This began the longest growth period in our history (unless Obama beat it). You won't find too many big retailers bitching about it. The more people have to spend, the better they do. But for guys who have to pay the poor schlubs out there cleaning yachts, they be agin it.
But but but Mr. Walnuts, you say, the cost of living is different in various sections of the country! Fear not, my daft darlings. Just as people with livable wages do, they will gravitate to those areas where it is cheaper to live. And once the high-cost sectors have run low on peasant sweat, they will raise their wages accordingly, beyond MW.
