aaaaaaaaactually it's a constitutional and federal republic

but I get where you're going with that
"It's heart breaking to see the country so invested in "winning," rather than preserving democracy."

Just to be fair, it seems EG was making a general statement about democracy. And in all fairness a republic is a form of democracy, abet not a direct democracy. So, if you want to use the general term Democracy to describe the country vis a vis the form of government, seems ok, given the wide latitude given in other areas people bring up. But, hey...I'm sure we have better things to do.

While I understand your point, I'd like to point out that the word "democracy" has been thrown around loosely in the world (you know, kind of like how the definition of vaccine recently changed from "creating immunity" to "lessening the effects", but I digress)

Many communist and marxist-like societies very much call themselves a democracy (I am not insinuating that the US is communist and/or marxist)

The classic definition of democracy is government by the people and the rule of the majority. Sure, you can say that the US is a democracy...so long as you prefix democracy with "corrupted". I suppose that's a reasonable assertion that the US is a corrupted democracy because it is not truly always about elected officials acting in the best interest of those that they represent. Lobbyists, under the table deals, and Super PAC's have undoubtedly broken the laws of "democracy". Keeping the people with the money happy is how people get into power. The rule of the majority idea also got thrown out the window when presidents started winning the college but losing the majority (and vice versa).

tl;dr - the two party system is a failure and inherently shifts the focus from "winning" to making sure that the other party loses, thereby securing victory under the guise of "lack of option"

I chose my words carefully :) Given where we are in the political climate and atmosphere, and also including the general inertia of government - it's the best it can be for right now.

The system is fair (regardless of victor) and the system works, even if I don't always like the result.

I hope that continues to be true in the future.

I'll admit, the "youth turnout" yesterday surprised me. I was hoping Gen-Z wouldn't let me down, but had my doubts, talking with a number of them. Maybe they just didn't trust telling their plans to an Xer?

I mean, the black nails SHOULD be a dead giveaway that I'm not a MAGA-nutjob.

Not true. But of course you'd think that way, because it give piggies three less reasons to arrest people.
