I know this is a favorite of yours to bring up. How much is enough? What's too little in your eyes? What percentage of income should go toward charity?

I'm curious, because I donate here or there, mostly to my university, but also to St. Jude and the local Child Advocacy Center.

Do you donate because it's the right thing, or do you do it for virtue points?

It's great if you give to charity, but if you don't, I don't hold that against anyone.
Why I donate:
* I volunteered at the Riley's Hospital for Children when I lived in Indiana - seeing beds occupied by children I got to know, on a semi-regular basis was heart-wrenching
* For a couple of years, I volunteer-taught math & science to kids that struggled with addition when they were in junior high. These kids took 2-3 subways by themselves (~ one hour commute) to try not fall even further behind than they already were. Some of these kids didn't give a flying fuck about the math, and only showed up because it was the only source of food they'd be able to get on a Saturday
* These days I spend my Saturday mornings gardening with kids in juvie (the star magnolias are blooming here in OH), and Sundays preparing meals for homeless people

Similarly, I don't hold it against anybody for not giving to charity, either their time or money. It's a personal choice - one that I personally believe in, take a lot of pride in, and will continue to advocate for.

AND - if the argument is the following

In my opinion, this is best accomplished at as local a level as possible starting with teaching individuals to take on personal responsibility, families looking after their own (e.g. taking care of their elderly), local charities/churches reaching out to their disadvantaged citizens, etc.
that social services should be replaced by giving at the local level, either through donations, churches, etc - then that suggests that someone LIKE KGB who can afford to put his God children through private school has the capacity to donate.

And he does, which is great. He should be proud of himself, and I mean that with all sincerity. He donates $1600, which is fantastic. And that isn't enough and does not scale for the number of people (children, elderly, with disabilities, in poverty) that need help.

It's extremely easy to look at someone and say "they should pull themselves by the boot straps" or "I advocate for self reliance" when you've had every advantage in the world.

KGB's content is poster-canonical content for "old white man that wins a race with a 30 meter head start wondering why races today aren't more fair."

It's extremely easy to say a social service program doesn't work when you know where your next meal is going to come from.

I'm the child of a first-generation immigrant whose father didn't have money to get on a bus to get to a shelter on his first night in the country.

Being born as a white male in the USA any time in the past 60 years is winning the lottery.

Then there was a few years before that when I donated a car to Kars4kids and before that a truck to the Kidney foundation.
He even donated a car to Kars4Kids, a known scam-charity

Good intent - though if the individuals are just as terrible as making decisions with their donations (if not worse) - then the argument of "leave it to the local level" doesn't hold water, and again, doesn't scale to the needs of the society.

Individuals can look at the people around them and ask "do I have enough?" or "does the person next to me have enough?" I'm proud to be the second type of person.

On a positive note, if you continue to so aggressively pat yourself on your own back, you may succeed to knock that huge chip off of your shoulder.

I'm the reason why the person next to you doesn't have enough, and never will. I'm a capitalist now*.

Also I donated to racism for my FB birthday celebration just so you knowβ‰ˆ.

* This is a lie, I actually run a housing non-profit^

^ This, too, is a lie, I'm actually a failed land lord

β‰ˆ i tried to donate to racism but mark wouldn't let me and β‰ˆ looks like little pieces of bacon β‰ˆβ‰ˆβ‰ˆβ‰ˆβ‰ˆβ‰ˆβ‰ˆβ‰ˆβ‰ˆβ‰ˆβ‰ˆβ‰ˆβ‰ˆβ‰ˆβ‰ˆβ‰ˆβ‰ˆβ‰ˆβ‰ˆβ‰ˆο Ώ½ οΏ½οΏ½β‰ˆβ‰ˆβ‰ˆβ‰ˆβ‰ˆβ‰ˆβ‰ˆβ‰ˆβ‰ˆβ‰ˆartβ‰ˆβ‰ˆβ‰ˆβ‰ˆβ‰ˆβ‰ˆβ‰ˆβ ‰ˆοΏ½

So it turns out it was a game of telephone. What actually happened was by the time the police came the guy had left and went to the nearby McDonalds. The police said since there was no one there they couldn't do anything but the property owner had the right to dispose of the guy's belongings. Credit where credit is due, the police did go to the McDonalds and told the guy that he was liable to be given a citation for trespassing if he came back there. Guy is gone now. Major sigh of relief. Not just that the guy is gone but that the mayor of the town near where I grew up isn't being paid off by George Soros to reek havoc on the town by telling cops to ignore homeless people trespassing.

I don't know about that, but I was promised Zombies from this Poxy-Clips, and yet again didn't get them! I want my money back for this shit! Always promising zombies, and never coming through.

Eclipse from the 90s, no zombies.
New Millennium, no zombies.
2012, no zombies.
Covid, no zombies.
2024 Eclipse, no zombies.

I'm SICK OF ALL THESE LIES!
