Well, 2T gone just like that. While your 401K's are tanking, you can take solace in knowing that we have ensured that Ukranian retirements are doing well.

That and we've all but wiped out a generation of Ukrainian men. | |

| | We don't even have that solace, nothing is going well for Ukraine. Putin is holding the line with small territorial gains to let Ukraine impale itself. You wouldn't know Ukraine is losing listening to many Western media outlets.

Putin's always wanted Russia to be brought into the Western fold. Can you imagine if we had Russia as part of NATO as a bulwark against China? Strong influence in crude/gas production worldwide.

| I feel the Russians being killed are essentially innocent as well. | | I agree. I believe Russia had broad public support for this, at least at first. Their situation has to be better than Ukrainian citizens getting rounded up in vans and sending in women, older men and people with Down's Syndrome. | |

I believe Russians broadly support the SMO, because it's in their interests.
I suspect Ukraine will get beaten badly enough they'll enter into talks despite what we say, at least that's what would be smart.
Putin doesn't want a frozen conflict, he wants some sort of agreement to put an end to this.
Why'd anyone think Russia could ever relinquish the Russian-speaking regions of what was once greater Ukraine?
The worst thing in the world would be for Ukraine to meaningfully turn the tide of the war.
Putin has made clear that will result in an escalation. I suspect he'd use poison gas before nukes as radioactive wind would probably blow back into Russia.

I think it only became their interest when Kamala spoke of Ukraine joining NATO. That's when Russia decided to establish a land bridge to Crimea/Sevastopol.
EDIT: Became an interest to finally act on, I mean. Of course there's the Maidan color revolution and the violence against ethnic Russians that broke the Minsk 2 Accords.

War became likely after the 2008 announcement in Bucharest that Ukraine would join NATO.
Why did Putin wait until 2022? Two reasons. One is because US appeared weak due to the calamitous withdrawal from Afghanistan, I believe Putin thought we would not get involved. The other reason for waiting until 2022 was that Putin didn't want a war.
While reading this, don't forget to compare and contrast with Georgia's fate.
