Yeah, agreed, Russia is a great power and they have a considerable influence in the world.
As awful a human being as Putin is, and despite military miscalculations, he’s rational and probably not driven much by emotion (because I think if he were, he’d have used a nuke or at least gas by now). | |

Although the problem with using a nuke in Ukraine is the radioactive air just blows back to Moscow. So maybe that and the fear of nato has more to do with it than emotion. Wait fear is an emotion. | |

Putin knows that IF he used even a low yield nuke in Ukraine, the US would decimate his ability to make war, without using a single nuclear device.
Russian targets would be obliterated with conventional weapons, in order to prevent Russia from using even one more.
Putin may be many things... but he is NO dummy. He doesn't want to end the human species anymore than anyone else does. Call Biden what you want, "Dark Brandon", "Sleepy Joe", whatever. But he has very good advisors, and is willing to listen to them.
If Putin uses nukes, it won't be "just one". Because he knows damned well what would happen. Again, he's many things... stupid is NOT one of them. If he's going to "drop the bomb", he'll go "all in". Many of "those in the know" have already analyzed this scenario. There isn't anyone who thinks Putin is doing anything other than "making threats", in the hopes that the West will "back down".
As for the Kursk invasion... That's likely to draw Russian troops away from Eastern Ukraine, in order to drive the invaders out. I could be wrong there.... but's logical. | |

Russia's intent was to take Kyiv and kill/capture the top government leaders. The plan pretty much went out the window when Russian forces failed to secure Hostomel Airport. Had they been able to do so, there were about 10 transports with troops and equipment on the way from Belarus. Ukrainian forces shelled the runway to make it unusable for the transports and routed the force sent to seize it.

Russia's central bank set the interest rate at 19% a couple of days ago. Defence spending at ~20% GDP is causing the inflation. The price of oil has also fallen sharply which hits one Russia's primary sources of foreign income.
