    How about Half Life 2?

Episode 1, maybe? Episode 2?

Well, it's pretty much been confirmed that neither HL2:Episode 3, or Half Life 3 will never....... ever.............. come out.

Have a look at this:

https://youtu.be/50lSIaSR3zc
From the perspective of economics....... the whole thing makes perfect sense. If you look at the projected sales, versus the.... well.... rather high probability of backlash from the gamer community.....(More on that in a moment) Half Life 3 will never see the light of day.

Just look at the results from the recent free weekend/beta play for the new Doom game. Almost everyone tried it....... and more than 70% absolutely hated it. The backlash was immediate, and intense.

There have been more than a few recent games that haven't lived up to "the hype", and the Internet Gaming Community has been very unforgiving about it. Of course, at $60-$80 per game.... it's not hard to understand why.

The other thing is the "micro-transaction" trend going on. Release a game cheap(compared to $60)... then charge small amounts for this, or that, or the other... and keep doing it. By the time it's all said and done, you've probably spent more than double what a whole game would cost. And the publishers know it. Which, BTW, is why they do it.

It may be that valvE is waiting for "the next big revolution in gaming" to focus their efforts on it. But given the vitriol that gamers are capable of these days, I can't say I blame them for putting HL3 on the back burner. I mean.... bomb threats? Really?

Ok so I have to eat my words now, because HL1 remains my favorite PC game where the storyline is concerned. I have never played part 2, however. We need a HL movie, probably in a trilogy set. I don't know who would play Freeman.

I still play tons of Doom (oldschool). =p Slowly making my way through every worthwhile custom level set ever created, heh.

I wasn't as huge a fan of Half-Life itself, as opposed to all of its great official and fan-made mods. I prefer non-linear games with tons of exploration and emergent gameplay, whereas what I've played of HL1 and 2 (far more of 1 than 2) it's more about a carefully scripted and guided experience through linear pathways (a great one at that, for those who like that sort of thing, but ehhh).

Valve's reasoning for being cautious about a potential HL3 makes sense. They already make most of their profit from hats and CS:GO skins I'm sure, as well as profiting from AAA titles on Steam and on the blood, sweat, and tears of indie developers whose games they cannibalize. They started out with somebody else's engine (Quake) and made tons of great changes to it, and then wisely bought out most of the promising and decade-defining mods of the late 90s (Team Fortress, CS, DoD, etc.). Stuff like Left 4 Dead and Portal were also highly unique in the mainstream, even if L4D was a makeover of Resident Evil: Outbreak in first-person, and Portal's origins aren't entirely dissimilar from TFC's conc and adventure maps, from what I've seen of it. But Valve's always been there putting their unique spin on things and making things work spectacularly, despite how heavily they've always leaned on pre-existing tech and design, and they're still largely known for being cutting edge and representing highest quality.

They definitely wouldn't want HL3 to flop. And like HL1, HL2, and its various mods, it would also want HL3 to have that same level of impact, which is increasingly difficult in today's market. I can certainly see that they'd be waiting for the most opportune moment to truly capitalize on making another generation-defining game. If not during the potential upcoming VR period of gaming, if it catches on, then they'll probably be looking for novel ideas via some other avenue.

Back to Doom, after Doom 3 released and was immediately forgotten about, it's great that Id (and/or Bethesda =/) were wise enough to scrap their initial CoD-like build and really try to tap into what classic Doom and 90s-era shooters were all about with DOOIV!. It's definitely something mainstream titles have largely veered away from for the past decade or so, so there was once again a gap to be filled that was perfect to justify its release. I haven't gotten to play it yet myself, since playing TFC on this laptop is already an 800x600 30fps slideshow (ugh), but I'm building a new rig now to finally play some current PC games myself. DOOIV! certainly is nowhere on the level of 1 or 2, in terms of overall quality and design (especially level design, as from what I understand it's still a much more linear experience compared to being dungeon crawlers like the original titles). But it seems to have done a decent job of blending the old with the new, and at least it's a straight-up gameplay-fest without being burdened by tutorials or bullshit plot devices that hold the gameplay back, and again functions more like arena 90s shooters than most stuff we have today (not that the originals were solely arena shooters, but w/e). Its MP may be largely derided, but the SP experience seems to have hit its mark and made Doom popular again with the mainstream (as opposed to the MP beta, the actual game has amazing reviews on Steam so far). They did a much better job than I was expecting them to do.

So for HL3, with all the risks it carries, and how Valve doesn't want to make a misstep or blunder, they're going to have to, bare minimum, pull off the same thing as Id/Bethesda did with DOOIV!. An approximation of their old successes with enough genuinely new and/or rarely seen mechanics/features in the current market in order to justify a pinnacle release. Short of that, they'll feel even more public rage than they currently get for not releasing anything. And in the meantime, hats and skins.

HL3 is the Valve secret weapon for Vive. Hold off on PC upgrades until this becomes clear, imho.

Newel himself said that people had no interest in the single player anymore due to multiplayer. After seeing the success of the new Doom game, maybe Gaben should reconsider HL3. So as long as its done right.

Whatever he is smoking, I definitely want some. I'm probably not the only one who plays story mode when they first get the game. I think it helps you to learn the backstory of the game as well as allows you to get familiar with the quirks. Just my .02 though.
