Okay. I've always gamed on my laptop ever since I left my parents for college back in 2008. However after playing 20 hours of killing floor 2 I think it is hurting my laptop. Anytime the fan turns on now it's really loud. I think I may have overheated something.

My laptop still runs fine, but the noise is annoying.

I am thinking about getting a desktop mostly for gaming, but I'd probably do other stuff on it as well (browse internet...Microsoft office type things) but I am the most ignorant person when it comes to technology. I've looked at HP and a lot of the prices are a lot higher than I expected and don't even appear to come with a monitor?

Are there any decent enough desktops with monitors that aren't over say $800 that could run KF2 smoothly. I don't even know what to look for in terms of graphics cards etc.

Hey snooze, Shitty to hear about the lapptop, they seem to all do that overtime, usually the problem is that the thermal paste on the CPU and/or prossesor has broken down/ evaporated through continuous use, it's not a problem I would fix myself, if you're not computer savvy, but it still shouldn't be too expensive of a fix, thats if you decide to even fix it, just giving you an idea of what to ask about if the time came.

As for desktop computers, getting one build would be the best way to go, but if you're looking in a store, these would be the brands I would price for, in this order..

Asus
Hp
Dell
Toshiba

I will live and die by HP, by far my favorite name in the computer world (store wise) their kind of the "middle man" not the best, but good quality for your buck.

Don't hear much about lenovo, so I don't have an opinion, but stay as far away from Acer as you can.

If you're having trouble with looking for a monitor, a 2nd hand led/lcd TV would suffice, just make sure the computer you're looking at has an hdmi port, they should all have them at this point though

My laptop is currently 6 years old so I'm not sure if it's worth a fix rather than a replace. However I do love it (it's an hp).

If I were to get a brand that I actually know it would definitely be HP. I've had a couple dells in my life and they both only lasted less than 3 years.

Just make sure that it has a power supply you can upgrade. You will definitely need to upgrade any "stock" HP desktop power supply if you plan to add a high power video card (or even if you add any peripherals). Some of the cheaper models may have the power supply on the motherboard and those can't be changed out.

HP all the way. You couldn't GIVE me a Dell box.

Good point about the PS..... always get a higher rating than you need, and make sure it's upgradable. As for repairing your laptop..... the biggest part of the cost is the labor of taking the bloody thing apart. Parts are cheap, just make sure you get the right paste(there are several levels of it). If you have someone else do it, ask what their labor charge is for something that simple.

I have a friend who works on PCs, and he has never charged me more than $50+parts. It's not difficult to learn to do yourself, there are plenty of videos on youtube you can learn from. Like I said, the hardest part is taking the bitch apart and putting it back together.

I've been working on my own systems for a while, but there's always something I'm not comfortable doing myself.

OH! As far as your laptop goes, it may just need a good cleaning(internally). You'd be surprised how much dust gets in there. That could cause your noise. I know it has on my desktop... but I'm fine with doing a tear-down and clean. Can of air, a few q-tips, and some 90% isopropyl. Takes about 10 minutes. I also pull my PS apart and clean it.

6 years is a decent run for a lappy. If they run the life of their OS, I think its a success. If you like HP (I don't) then you should sign up for Woot.com. They have lots of flash sales, typically HP's, but most are refurbs. This site is usually flash sales on all kinds of items and you gotta get em while they're hot.

I guess my problem is I'm not sure exactly what computer specs are good. (For the price) I can see the 'recommended settings' for KF2, but unless I can find a comp with those exact settings I wouldn't know what is better or worse than what they have listed.

For example, I know my laptop has a AMD Radeon 6700M series card, but I have no idea what other cards are better or worse than that. My card runs they game fine, just my laptop overheats. Nor do I know what 'power source' would be good. When I think power source I'd think plugged into wall compared to battery... lol

I'm running a 500w in mine.... but I'd recommend a 700w as a base. You know basic numbers..... so #ghz, #cores, #gbytes RAM, #gb/tb of HD is easy. Video cards, just look at what your model is, and compare it to newer models. FWIW, the more cores the processor(CPU) has, the better. I'm running a quad core from when they first came out.

I always go with GForce cards, but if you prefer AMDs, that's fine, too.

    How about something like this?

http://www.cyberpowerpc.com/system/INTEL_i5_SFF_Configurator

It doesnt come with a monitor, and youd probably want to upgrade the ps for a few bucks more...but it should be around $850

They also have a "MLK 2" sale for $839 worth looking at.

As I posted in another thread....wait for Ryzen to come out...whether you go with AMD or Intel...prebuilt or build your own...I can guarantee prices will drop. I believe Ryzen is set to release end of Feb./ beginning of March.

Cheaper building your own. Check out newegg.com and get the parts there. If you aren't comfortable doing that, just go to your local bestbuy; you can get a VR ready desktop for $800-900.

    This is what I'm running:

http://www.geforce.com/hardware/desktop-gpus/geforce-gt-610/...
It's considered "lower end" now.... but was a decent upgrade when I bought it. Won't run Rocket League worth a damn.... but blazes pretty good on my classic level games.
