Poll: Support?
Support it (50%)
Do not support it (6%)
Leads to widespread Fraudulent voting (25%)
No evidence of wide spread Fraud (19%)
Poll has ended (it ran for 7 days). 16 total votes.
Interested in knowing what the general belief is behind the ability to cast your vote via mail. If you believe there exists fraud or not please leave your reasoning.

There's always going to be fraud.

Not sure how this would be regulated.

Also, doesn't it seem like an energy injection into the already struggling USPS?

USPS is not going to suffer from additional biz. They are at my place 3 times a day (not quite sure why they can't make it all in one trip) and doing fine. They'd make a profit if Congress hadn't siphoned off a bunch.

Regulate what? Mail-in voting has been going on for decades. Military, ex-pats, the elderly, the Commander-in-Chaos, etc.

Fraud? Where?? Like one case in a billion votes. Unless you count those GOP fucks in Carolina that got busted. And that is the ONLY organize large scale attempt that I've heard about since LBJ.

I meant that USPS will have more business if more votes were sent via mail.

Fraud is everywhere, all the time. I don't trust any voting system, no matter how it works.

Also we need to get rid of gerrymandering while we're at it.

Gerrymandering, fuckin A. Plus voter suppression laws and closing polling places. In tomorrow's Kentucky primary, Louisville and the surrounding county have ONE poll open for 600K people.

So, at the end of the day about 70% are for mail in ballots.

People that voted "no evidence of fraud" seemed to explain why they believe that this, historical and until recently, accepted method of voting should continue.

On the other hand, while there are several votes for not voting by mail due to the possibility of fraud, those indicating such, made no showing.

Absentee ballots are not simply mailed out. Also, they are necessary for people who can't get to their polling station (e.g. military). They have rules to vote by mail, here's a couple of examples:

https://www.fvap.gov/military-voter
https://www.ncsl.org/research/elections-and-campaigns/absent...
The most common method to verify that absentee/mailed ballots are coming from the intended voter is to conduct signature verification.
This links a signature to the vote. All it takes is a dishonest person(s) to "lose" ballots. How many ballots have a discrepancy and are discarded every year? Remember, "do whatever it takes.." Right now, in New Jersey, there is a case of fraud. It's not the Republicans this time.

Some states have other methods for verifying absentee/mailed ballots. They may require absentee/by mail voters to include photocopies of their identification documents or have the absentee/mailed ballot envelope signed by witnesses or notarized.
We're all trying to protect our information, and this is what we're going to do?

Also, doesn't this contribute to voter suppression?

The only way to have a fair election is to have the population appear in person, verify who they are, and vote in secret, all at one time on a specific day. Instead of trying to circumvent the process we should be accommodating it. There is no excuse for us not to be able to provide an acceptable number of polling sites. I'm not saying one on every street corner, but one for hundreds of thousands of people (as Walnuts stated) is, in a word, stupid. It's detrimental to our voting process.

Gerrymandering is one step away from legal political corruption.

"Ballot harvesting" is something everyone should be paying attention to. We need to stop the corrupt practice of overturning elections weeks later, because a group went out and acquired more votes for their party.

Okay, I can see not having a polling station on every street, but why not every FEW streets? Close enough for even a disabled person to get to.

Should people who are legitimately homebound be denied their right to have their vote? Especially during a pandemic.

Frankly, I highly question the ability of my neighbors to properly "social distance" themselves at our polling location. Which means either I'm likely to get into a physical altercation(at best), or arrested trying to cast my vote(at worse), simply for trying to stay 6 feet away from some mouth breather who thinks this thing is a political stunt.

I've been on vacation. I don't think absentee ballots, as they have been used, is a problem. I believe mail in voting on a grand scale is subject to too many problems.

When you're talking about a small number of absentee ballots to verify and count, it's not as bad. Elections, even for a small village or township, are a pretty big deal, requiring a number of volunteers...people you hope are upstanding AF and will do what they're supposed to.

When you look at an area like Wayne County, for example...well, their track record for fraud, or 'election issues', speaks for itself.

Unfortunately, I do not put a lot of faith in people, which is why I have always voted in person. Sadly, that means I have to put my trust in a machine (of some sort) to not be subject to error; however, at the end of it, I know that the ballot that I cast, that I filled out, went into the machine from my hand, unaltered at that point.

I also like that, at least here, I have to present my ID or my voter card, to cast my vote. Sorry, not sorry, but if I have to present an ID to buy booze, or weed, or cigarettes, then doing so while performing an important function like voting shouldn't be a big deal.

That said, I have no qualms with making voting more accessible. It really pissed me off that the only time we have a high turn out for a major vote is when legalization of Marijuana was on the ballot. Frankly, it was the reason why we have a Democrat Governor, Secretary of State and Attorney General in Michigan. It is what it is though...I'm not a fan of the Governor, but I also don't spend my time weeping about it either.

What does make me weep is that everyone doesn't exercise their right to vote....for whatever reason. I remember years ago my mother said 'I don't know why I bother voting, your dad and I cancel each other out.' Always irked me, because it was not really true, and most times there are other ballot issues that need those votes.

Of course, the time to have worked on this, apparently, was November 2, 2016....not March or April of 2020. Yes, Covid necessitated some changes, but when it is rushed, we're just going to listen to another 4 years of how the election was rigged one way or another. Although, we'd probably have to listen to that anyway.

Finally, and I get that this is a little too basic, especially from a country fella like myself that votes in a small township, but if you can shop at Wal-Mart, follow social distancing and wear a mask, you can vote in person.

    No.

I don't buy cigarettes either.

But I just spent a week with family who do buy weed, and talk about butter, and oils and etc etc etc. Then there was the discussion of moonshine...

Which part of this did I not comprehend properly? Yes, I highlighted parts of what you said.... that's on me. But this is directly quoted from you.
