A few weeks ago I went and bought a nice bird feeder for the yard. Slowly, over time, more birds found out about it to the point where it was constantly being used.
Obviously that also means those dang varmints also get involved.
I've seen baby red squirrels, a fat ass grey squirrel and one chipmunk. The bird feeder would close shut when the weight of a grey squirrel was on it. The red squirrels were too cute and light so I let them feed sometimes. The chipmunk was the loudest and most obnoxious of the bunch.
Two days ago I notice some bite marks on the metal wire holding the feeder up. It was as if they wanted to make it topple for the prizes inside.
Yesterday, I had to go into the office. Came back from work and the feeder was on the ground, nuts and seeds everywhere. The wire was still hanging, so it fell some other way. As I walk towards it, 4 chipmunks scutter out of there squeaking & talking to each other as they spread out to the woods.
They somehow opened up the top of feeder and chewed at the pieces attaching the wire to the feeder. Those motherfuckers gotta pay.

A few questions:
A.) should I buy a slingshot or beebee gun and snipe them to death?
B.) what is a good way to avoid having this happen again? "ALLLLLLVIIIINNNNN!"
C.) anyone recommend a good product / feeder?

Hahah, yeah. He was the first thing I thought of when I saw it on the ground.

I want to set up an SG but it only shoots chipmunks.

Pellet gun, or 22. I hate the mother fuckers and I kill them on sight.

I switched feed to Safflower Seed. It's not 100%, especially if they're desperate in the winter, but Squirrels don't seem to care for it. On top of that, most 'trash' birds don't like it either. My feeders are full of chickadees, nuthatches, titmice, cardinals and the occasional grosebeak. Over time, the squirrels have pretty much stayed away.

.177 or "air gun" would be the way to go; generally no requirement for lic. (ck you local) and generally about a c note.

You cops just LOVE shooting things that are trying to survive, don't you.

(Rhetorical question)

Anyway... what *I* would suggest, is setting up a separate feeder just for the "varmints". Entice them away from the bird feeders. Give them no reason to go after it, and see what happens.

I have a bird feeder out back, but don't use any traps, tricks, or any of that shit. Remember, these "varmints" are just looking for something to eat. So of course, they will go for obvious stuff like bird feeders. Give them an incentive NOT to, and they will leave that stuff alone.

After all, you're already looking to feed wildlife, right? Go all in, or don't go at all. We've left peanuts(which are relatively cheap) outside for the squirrels/chipmunks, and they leave our bird feeders alone.

It's one thing to not want to feed rats(because they tend to fuck things up).... and we DO have that problem around here. But you can't completely exclude by species. That's a lot of effort for such a low gain. Even though I live just outside Baltimore City... we have a lot of wildlife here... and I have no problem feeding most of them. Hell, like I told my neighbor, if the rats have a food source, they won't chew on the wires of your car.

Kill them, then string up their bodies around the yard as a warning to others.

They fucked around and found out, now they stay away. Effective deterrent.

I think I've made some comments about Americans that are similar to yours.

edit: it's why our metal scene sucks and we never get the great shows.

My Weirauch HW30S in .177 gives squirrels a bad case of 650fps lead poisoning. Excellent results with it for urban pest control. Dropped a groundhog with it a couple of weeks ago too but it needed a double-tap.

Meh, our metal scene pretty much died before the turn of the millennium. Grunge took over, and while there are some good song there, a lot of it is shit.

Then, of course, over-producing and auto-tune took over. Music went to shit at that point. I find very little worth listening to at this point.

Blow dart guns are quite fun and accurate for close range. A hobby in the making 😁
