what was your first introduction to Team Fortress
I think we may have had this discussion before...but it can't be any more redundant...
I found TCF on Newsgroups..but it was basically useless..unless you ran LAN MAYBE(?) (WON WAS THE SHIT)
somehow I found Drippy's after buying the GOTY
TFC was GAME OF THE YEAR....
I'm old
I played Quake II and Quake WOD on MSN gaming zone...anyone else?

End of 1999 (or very early 2000). Dad had found this game called "Half Life". We played it religiously together around the clock (I was 10/11 years old). Great memories together with him...and then one day, he heard of this thing called Team Fortress Classic.
Installed it, loaded it up, and I sat next to him as he loaded into some pub playing Rock2. That moment was our first experience joining a game server.
56k with 250+ ping, shitty netcode, bad FPS, laggy everything...and it was wonderful.
And the rest, as they say, is history | |

Oh, man... I know we've had this discussion before, but it's been a LONG time! Also, I like talking about this.... so let's do it!
I had only recently switched from the Amiga platform to the Windows platform. One of my oldest friends called me up, and said, "Have you played this game called Half Life?" I told him that I hadn't even heard of it. He gave me a website to go download the demo for it(Half Life: Uplink). So I did.
It blew me away! This was in late 1998... I think... the "Game of the Year" edition had recently come out, so I drove over to Best Buy, and bought it for $9.99(on sale). It had some extra content, but I was focused on the main game.
A few weeks later, he called me up again, and asked me if I'd tried the included game "Team Fortress Classic"... I told him "No, I'm still trying to get through Half Life"...
He told me to switch it over.
Remember, at the time, TFC was just a "Mod" for Half Life, and we were on Dial Up. So I had a separate phone line for internet. So, with the land-line(voice) held to my ear, I loaded it up. We joined a server together, and "voice-comm'd" over the phone.
I was hooked.
At the time, I also had 3 way calling, meaning(for those who aren't old enough to remember this feature) I could call TWO different people at the same time, and we could all talk together. I've got a story about how me and a bunch of friends did a "party line" using 3 way calling.... but that's for another time. Anyway, Dennis(the guy who got me into Half Life) and our other "brother from another mother" got our friend Mike to buy the game, and give it a try.
We were such assholes.... I swear.... We would relay information back and forth, mostly about the other team, and we made custom sprays just to be assholes.... hey, it's how we were back then. If we could get under someone's skin, make them mad... they would make mistakes, and we would have a laugh.
Mike is the youngest of us, Dennis is the oldest. But we were/are family. Have been since the late 80s. It was SUCH a good time, being with those guys.... We partied together, shared many great days/nights together, and saw each other as brothers. Hell, we prepared to celebrate the end of the world together, December 31, 1999. And yeah, we were disappointed as shit when it didn't end. I have the video to prove it.

It came with Counter-Strike when I first got it in 1999 but I didn't install it from there until after I first played it as a demo that was attached to RealPlayer, though | |

After a soccer game when I was younger I went back to a friends house and he showed me TFC and counter strike for the first time. A few days later I had my mommy buy me the games and I played them more then any other game up until late 2004 when WoW came out. I quit TFC and CS at that time b/c all my friends moved onto other games(mainly WoW) | |

My dorm roommate in college showed me TFC in the fall of 99 and he let me play it when he wasn’t on. I didn’t get my own PC until 2000. His game name was [DoA?]Xin. I remember watching a ton of DoA? matches and was very impressed by Cyrus-BSU, who came from [AOD]. What was so cool about [DoA?] is they were a pretty good team that dominated on Pipezone. They never lost a round of pipezone even if they’d lose the OGL overall match. They beat the likes of CNBL twice, CSI, NIL8, Ai, SOL, DP2, AGT, & ELB on Pipezone for those who are old school clanners. | |
