So the NOAA only has 3 days of space weather predictions. They have Radio, Solar Radiation, and Geomagnetic Storm classifications. And each have a scale of 1 (weakest) to 5 (strongest).
May 11th just received a G4 Severe classification. My concern is if this scientific guess changes to a G5 extreme warranting action by the general public. I've seen a couple of G3 predictions three days out get upgraded to a G4 on the actual day of the event in the past year, but I wasn't concerned because I've never seen a prediction off by a scale of 2 or more.
I'll keep refreshing this daily, I'm going to take extra precautions if this does indeed change to a G5 such as withdrawing cash, recharging batteries, buying extra dry food + bottled water, etc.
On this 11 year solar cycle, 2024 has the highest stress on the star as the north/south poles flip every 11 years. Don't rely on the mainstream news, follow the science. The main fear here is large spread power outages across the nation if it becomes a G5 such as the Carrington Event from 1859. I'm going to be extra curious tomorrow to see what the 5/12 prediction is going to be because sometimes it gets worse too.

I heard about this in a reddit post titled, what are low key things scientists/astronomers are afraid of. And this was one of the things.
Transformers are already a LONG lead time item that needs to be purchased two years in advanced on construction projects.
This will essentially fry every transformer in the world. | |

The nation losing power has been the #1 threat from a prepping standpoint because there's multiple ways for this to occur & the likely outcome of a worldwar 3 scenario, sorry no nukes killing people like you imagined from movies.
THREE WAYS TO KILL THE POWERGRIDS
A very high altitude nuke detonation would result in an EMP wave well over 1000 miles destroying electronics, even if unplugged & turned off. While you can directly turn hundreds of thousands of people to ash with a direct hit, knocking out the power actually kills tens of millions or more over the course of months or possibly years. (electronics inside a faraday cage are protected)
Mother nature with the sun every 11 years roughly with a Solar storm has the potential to kill the grid, with CME's larger than earth itself being fired into space that sometimes line up perfectly with our planet. This threat is more damaging to stuff plugged into your outlet during the "event" regardless if turned on or turned off. But those particles collect all along the powerlines itself surging faster than surge protectors can react.
Or a pure digital World War 3 takes place, where a single or collection of hacker armies attack the USA where its hard to "blame" who the enemy is. As our grid's key areas explode due to computer commands sent from overseas.
All three have the same result: no power leading to no food or running water. Plastic visa cards = worthless.
Key thing is don't panic, but doing basic common sense during a time when the odds of a solar storm likely to occur is smart. Fill your car's tank up with gasoline. Pull out $1000 in cash, Buy $20 in bottled water. Ultimately if the solar storm passes & was nothing, your car needed the gas anyways, you redeposit the cash and you give the bottled water to the homeless during the hot summer months ahead.
You don't wait until a few hours after a nationwide panic spreads on the news to take action. As banks & gas stations have crazy lines and ATMs everywhere are emptied. Imagine going to your bank and having a limit of $50 withdraw due to the demand.
It's also important to realize there are roughly three or four G5 storms per 11 years, which are on the very weak side of the G5 classification. Also keep in mind that the 1859 Carrington event would be strong enough to end our powergrid, and based on some scientific evidence (not sure if it was the rings inside of the trees or ice caps or what exactly) there have been solar storms within 500-1000 years prior that were determined to have been significantly stronger then the carrington event. | |

The newspaper articles were my favorite. The sky was bright enough to read the newspaper without the assistance of candlelight after midnight as was mentioned in the newspapers. When telegraph operators got badly shocked, where some areas had some lines that even caught on fire. Northern lights visible as far south as Mexico.
Large parts of the country probably didn't notice beyond that evening though, as it was 1859. They hunted or fished for their dinner & read books by candlelight. No refrigerators, washing machines or cars yet. | |

Years ago I watched an interview where they were discussing casualties resulting from a prolonged power grid failure & a teenager listening seemed very concerned that there would be no internet. "That's right, you couldn't post a daily selfie or get emotional support from your friends." Of course people are starving to death, maybe worry about that more.
The screwed up part is there isn't much that could be said or done telling the world ahead of time, if they determined a grid killing G5 was on its way. Imagine famous news reporters announcing a guaranteed multi month to year long power grid failure due to the sun with a 36 hour advanced notice.
FAKE EXAMPLE:
"Greetings. I have some sad news, our digital way of life is about to end for at least 6months and with that comes big changes. Those of you without a gun, please give whomever threatens you with a gun whatever they ask so that you may live as there will be no police to save you. No help is coming. Gas stations & grocery stores will remain unstocked for 6months & possibly longer.
Those of you that have basic first aid skills (stiching, disinfectants/antibiotics, bullet wound recovery) and food gathering (hunting, fishing) that manage to live away from crowded areas will likely survive the thinning of the herd. All that I hope for is that the few of us that manage to survive, please be more grateful for what we had when rebuilding a better future. SWPC Issues its first G4 watch since 2005
"NOAA Space Weather Prediction Center issued a Severe G4 Geomagnetic Storm Watch - the first since January 2005."
"Several strong flares have been observed over the past few days and were associated with a large and magnetically complex sunspot cluster which is 16 times the diameter of earth. Additional solar activity is expected from the region."
"Only 3 Severe (G4) geomagnetic storms have been observed during this solar cycle which began Dec 2019. The last G4 was march 2024 and the last G5 Extreme was the Halloween Storms in October 2003. That G5 resulted in power outages in Sweden & damaged power transformers in South Africa."
