Nov 18th 2024 was the 30th anniversary of the film Star Trek Generations, which was the final film appearance of William Shatner as James T Kirk who sacrificed his life to save the day. I love that movie with the Nexus Ribbon on the cliff.

This short web movie (in cooperation with Paramount) which combines live-action footage and computer generated imagery. William Shatner and other Star Trek vets were involved in the making of this new film. Basically I think the concept is this is what Kirk's first moments after dying and what he see's.

This is the fourth short film from the archive's 765874 series. I'll post some links for the other 3 soon. This one is unlisted, meaning it can't be searched for on youtube. Below is the entire short film, without credits is 8 minutes long:

Star Trek Generations 1994 was one of my favorite films. The scene with Picard getting to meet Kirk in the log cabin, from burning his eggs to riding throughout the countryside living his version of heaven was amazing.

I miss the Originals, Next Gen & Voyager series so badly. Newer Star Trek shows pushing LGBTQ, emotions, therapy instead of incredible storytelling adventures. The acting in newer star trek shows/movies has been so poor compared to the older content.

I like watching that Star Trek cartoon on paramount plus. I think it’s called lower decks.

This is truly good for the heart. Thank you for sharing.

Hope.

Star Trek simply needs hope.

It's not fucking rocket science, Kurtzman.

ahaha, typically SNL isn't very funny but that was rather good. Old style crew vs new style, lol.

The older star trek shows literally acted like science nerds exploring, where they made up scientific terms to enforce the sense of life & death struggles they encountered. The team leaned on each other. Sure leaders like Picard or Janeway or their crew had slight personal sidestories or lighthearted drama, but the creative writing about the alien threat or space anomaly always took center stage.

The newer star treks have a crew with massive hairstyles or bizzare quirky personalities, where the show centers on their emotional struggles or them suffering from a lack of identity either through gender or spiritually issues. The writers are hoping that the loud impulse driven crew will leave an impact on the viewer, as the sensitive star trek crew carry around their emotional baggage from episode to episode. The idea of ONE person dying vs hundreds of people is always a challenging idea lately, where newer shows always attempt to save everyone no matter what. If there's a real chance hundreds of people will die or the girl with the red hair, let's just try to save everyone and hope for the best. They introduce too many characters, none stand out with exceptional acting skills as they recycle previously used plots if there's any time leftover between the drama.

One of the biggest differences is The Next Generation & Voyager the crew didn't try acting too hard and with such exceptional scripts everything felt believable and thus their acting actually stood out very well! Whereas with newer star trek shows everyone's trying to overact, and where the story lacks they try to make up for with incredible visuals.

I'll be honest, maybe I am being unfair to Kurtzman. The production values in that episode of Discovery you linked me to are better than I remember.

They're extra long Jaguar adverts.

I never got into Star Trek. I'm a pretty big nerd so I'm a little disappointed I couldn't get into it. What was the original one with Shatner called? I guess I just thought it too cheesy or something.

You almost had it; TOS, The Original Series.

This latest video did exactly as intended. Good stuff. Maybe they should go back and see if they can fix SW Ep 7-9, cos damn.

Newer star treks are morally bankrupt trainwrecks, as everyone from the people on deck to the engineers in the engine room are now a human resource trained therapist first and crewmember second. The low level of maturity & dumbed down dialog is meant to match the younger & dumber audiences of today. We don't need to explain tachyon particles traveling faster than light or what happens when you go to warp 9. Instead of impressing you with technical information either real or convincingly made up, we'll throw makeup onto adult actors & make them act like whiney teenagers unsure of their emotional state from scene to scene.

Captain Kirk inspired half a dozen movies with himself included, and with Captain Picard that did the same thing with theatrical movies too! Today we get quick streaming projects attempting to be politically relevant leading to no new franchises. If someone from 1990 watched Startrek Discovery, they'd conclude that based on the mentally handicapped messages in the writing & the attention starved audience that such a production is either meant as a joke never to be aired or is targeted towards a pre-teen audience only.

I did watch every episode of Star Trek Discovery, and while it was watchable sort of, nothing lately compares to older content made. Red haired Tilly and the trans-masc falling inlove with the trans-feme, to the actual democrat politician pretending to be a star trek leader later in the show. Too many cringe "inclusive" agendas. Black alert, we have two male gay officers kissing. I'm fine with including some of this stuff if it's light & in the background. Forcing everything to be in one show & making it so foundational was toxic. Sorry I'm done venting about it.

I'm biased as all fuck, but TNG is, imho, pretty okay to get into for the uninitiated, and you won't miss a great deal of lore.

If TNG S1 is too cheesy (perfectly understandable) jump to the start of S2.
