So what now? Do we shift our goal to alleged nuclear weapon prevention to justify the deaths of servicemen, running up the debt, and disrupting the world economy? I disagree with that. I think it was stupid to attack in the first place; I realize we can't change the past, but I see no graceful exit from this for us, which is what makes me upset this it was so so poorly thought out (no exit strategy beyond the false belief that their government would topple). I only see us plodding on in this internecine conflict and think we will be the ones metaphorically crying uncle when the republican party is smashed in the midterms and congress finally reigns in this ̶w̶a̶r̶
̶ ongoing conflict. And I don't see how Iran doesn't come out with some concessions that put it in a better spot than it was before we attacked them.
So what are your thoughts? Should we really rally 'round the flag here considering the costs? Or at least how do you think this is going to play out? | |
"no exit strategy" / "dragged into war" This wasn't a ground invasion or occupation, it was a targeted strike campaign. When you say "Exit strategy" that language presumes a mission (e.g. holding territory, regime change, nation building) that was never actually the stated objective.
"shifting goals to nuclear prevention" This isn't a new goalpost.. preventing Iranian = nukes was the stated rationale from the start, it wasn't something that was retrofitted after the fact to justify losses.
"false pretenses" False how? Disputing the intelligence assessment is a legitimate argument, but it's a different argument than asserting the pretense was fabricated.
"considering the costs" It's not "cost of striking vs. cost of doing nothing" it's more like "cost of striking vs. cost of a nuclear capable Iran".
Reasonable people disagree on whether the strikes will prove to have been worth it, and nobody has the benefit of hindsight yet. No idea. I thought this would wrap up months ago, but now I’m thinking it’ll probably be at least next summer.
