Providing proof of citizenship to register seems logical. Do it in high school, like they used to bring all the males in on their 18th birthday to force them to sign up for selective service. Why not sign them up to vote at the same time?

At the Michigan SOS, when a woman changes her name on her drivers license, they update her voter information at the same time. It's pretty easy.

I've never not been asked for my ID to vote, even though my polling station is small and they know me.

The argument against it is weak.
Even in states without strict photo ID laws, voters typically must:
• Be registered in advance
• Provide identifying information (name, address, birthdate)
• Sign a poll book
• Have their signature matched against records

Some states use signature verification or affidavits under penalty of perjury.

So “no photo ID required” does not mean “no identity verification at all.”

That’s why you’re never asked for a photo id. Because all the things have happened already.
The problem with this is that anywhere there is a gap or opportunity for fraud to occur, it WILL occur - it's human nature. Just like people who collected millions (hundreds of millions?) in PPE loans during COVID, under the table schemes in politics...so while I understand your point of "all the things happened already", tell that to people who collect dead peoples' social security.

Imagine the bank saying "well this guy already presented everything to open an account and this guy came in and said he was this guy and his signature looked good, and he signed the affidavit regarding perjury penalty so I guess he's good!"

When fraud has a place to occur, it will (does) occur
