I know my limitations. I way too set in my ways.

Besides, at my best, I'm a great example. At my worst, I'm a bad example. Win/Win.
Too set in my ways....

you realize that means "Too stubborn"?

So, Katina wanted to take her/our friend (who is a coworker of Katinas) to this "upscale" charity shop on the other side of town this past Friday. The way she mentioned it, I thought it would just be the two of them. Maybe she just didn't want to impose on me to drive that far, I don't know. But I cleared the air about being fine with going there.

I happen to like the place, and sometimes find some really "cheap"(read: affordable) treasures. So, I did offer to drive. The offer was accepted. We made arrangements on what time, and all.

We picked Susan up, and off we went. Now, I know MOST of the way there, but I also note how bad Katina is at "navigating". So, she turned her GPS on, and handed it to Susan who was riding shotgun.

We get there with no issues (except the ones in my head), park, and Katina offers me her arm so she can help me balance going into the store.

We start making our way around (I've grabbed a trolly as soon as we were through the door, which is how I balance myself inside of stores), looking at all kinds of trinkets. We see some neat stuff, but nothing that's going to come home with us.

A little further in, I spot a turntable, but it didn't have a price on it. So, I left it sit.

Two more aisles over, and amid all this random music related stuff, I spot a keyboard. Full size keys, about 3 feet wide, with lots of buttons on it.

I've been looking for one since last year, but y'all know my finances haven't allowed me to do anything but "Wishlist" something like that on Amazon. Looking around, I spotted two more. But the one I first spotted looked very familiar. I gave it a "once over" visually, looked around, noticed the women were not paying attention, so I put it in the trolly. Then I went to look at the other two. One of them was in terrible condition, keys popped up, some broken in the "down" position... and they wanted $30 for it. I looked over the other one, which was $20, and while it was in a little better shape than the $30 one, it still wasn't "a good deal".

The one I had put in my trolly... I looked it over again. I spotted the price tag: $15. I gave it a much closer examination, and it only needed some light cleaning. I started walking away, while whistling innocently. As I did, I pulled out our shopping list (groceries), and started mentally scratching things off of it, that were meant for me specifically, until I'd tallied up enough "scratches" from the list to cover that $15.

Katina spotted the keyboard in the cart, and started to protest. I held up my hand, and explained what I was willing to do without, to buy that keyboard. I was actually adamant about getting it. Something just TOLD me that it was exactly what I was looking for. Hell, it might even have been Rose whispering in my ear. I don't know. All I DID know is that the keyboard was coming home with me.

We end up buying it, along with an inexpensive pair of shoes for Katina. She liked them, and they were half the price of the keyboard.

Now, it was JUST the keyboard. No stand, no power supply, no "sheet music holder-upper", but just looking where the power supply connects, told me I likely had one at home. Again, it looked in extremely good condition. Just needed a light cleaning.

We get home, and Timothy (of all people) threw a fit. He thought it was going to just sit in the living room for a few months, before I took it up to the computer room and forgot about it. Oh, how wrong he was.

Yesterday (Saturday) came, I took my pills, opened a beer, and got to work. I had "an idea" of where I wanted to put it, but it was going to take a lot of work to clear out the sp0t.

(Yes, I just made a d2f'er joke)

Before I got to work, though... I went on Amazon to look at the keyboards I had Wishlisted. This one wasn't among them, but I looked it up anyway. My jaw hit the floor. It was one that I had looked up, but knew I would never be able to afford, so I didn't Wishlist it. THAT is why it looked so familiar.

I checked the price...

Depending on the seller, and granted, "New" ones came with a stand, sheet music holder, and power supply... but the price range was between $100 and $150.

I set out clearing out the spot, and looking for a power adapter that would fit it. I actually found the adapter within an hour of looking for it. It's the same one that fits my Atari 2600.

Because I couldn't wait to find out... I plugged it in and pressed the power button....

It lit up, flashed for a few seconds, and every key pressed made the appropriate note. I jumped for JOY! Now my knees are ready to sue me.

That just made me take my next round of meds, open another beer, and focus on where I was going to put it. I started piling stuff on the bed, got a quizzical look from Katina, So I told her that it works.

Took me until almost midnight, but I've got it set up, and playing it. While I enjoy just "pressing the keys, and putting out what's inside of me, I decided, "I'm going to learn at least ONE piece of music over the next few days.... now WHICH song am I going to learn?" Then, it hit me exactly what I'm going to learn first....

"The Imperial March".

You know, that fairly simply bit that plays whenever Darth Vader is about to show up?

Yeah. I'm learning that. I've got the first part down, but it's only 3 different notes, really... At least, to start off with.

It's been over 30 years since I last played piano "seriously".... but finding this deal.... Oh, I'm ALL in.

Also, unlike the "Galaga/Ms. Pac-Man/Pac-Man" conversion kit I bought that she said she would likely play, but never did... she actually messed with it a little bit last night while I was draining my bladder.

Here it is, on Amazon. Apparently it has songs built in that it can teach you...

It's not a sheet music holder-upper, it's a fucking music stand. Yep, that simple.

Sp0t was obvious, and I'm not sure why you referred to him as a d2f joke.

You're not British, no matter how badly you wish you were. It's a shopping cart.

Did you really explain what the Imperial March is?

What the actual fuck....this is exactly why they say don't consume alcohol when you take your meds.

You drive? Holy fuck...

edit: Sorry, Iggy. Fucking Lions. Things were better that last 2 years when I didn't give any fucks about American football.

You probably know your sheet music but if you're rusty, there are Youtube videos that give you a graphical representation of what keys to hit as the song is playing. Kind of like the Rock Band games.

I'm inspired to dust off my keyboard and try the Youtube method. I always tried to learn things the hard way, like memorizing every key progression and chord beforehand instead of just picking up an instrument and having fun.

I can't help it with the British slang... I watch a LOT of British shows, and it kinda rubs off.

Also, I wasn't saying that sp0t himself is a joke, just that I spelled the word like his name, as a joke.

Music stand... yeah, couldn't remember the term when I was writing the post, and didn't want to gorfet what we were talking aboot.

Oh, also, if you'd prefer, I could call a "shopping cart" a "BUGGY", since that's an American term.... my sister uses it all the time. :p

And yeah, I *DID* have to explain the Imperial March, for those few people who come here who aren't Star Wars fans.

!me turns on my Darth Vader Lightsaber, and bonks PTA upside the head with it.

(As for the "edit".... it's okay man. I can get stressed out, too. But that's a major part of the reason I wanted to get a keyboard anyway.)

Honestly, it's been about 3 decades since I messed around with sheet music. Fortunately, the previous owner of this keyboard applied the "note stickers" to it, in the correct places. Which makes things a LOT easier.

One thing I definitely remember my chorus teacher pounding into our heads, was "note placement". In the spaces; "F A C E" (face), and on the lines.... it spells out "Every Good Boy Does Fine".

I am finding that I have to relearn the Sharps and Flats, as well as octaves.

There's a couple of things, though.... that I'm hoping to accomplish: The main one, being attempting to get my twitches and shaking under control. If nothing else, a sound is made whenever it happens.
