Sorry for making this forum my dumping ground for trivial questions I never figured out over the past 18 years...

Hypothetical: Let's say you're a medic doing all of these things simultaneously:

- running
- strafing
- priming a HH
- switching to medkit to infect someone
- spamming +attack1
- calling out something urgent on voice chat

For me that's: W, A, G, right-click, left-click and mouse-wheel click

But I can only strafe left while priming. And I lose control of the mouse when hitting all three buttons.

Do you have a perfect set of binds for this? Or an ergonomic 4-button mouse?

2 click grenades worked wonders for me

it took a bit getting used to and every now and again ill forget its priming and blow myself up but it allows for free use of WASD.

I use mouse 4 and 5 for grenades this is on a razer deathadder v2. mouse 3 (mouse wheel click) gets me to my default

'Q' to switch weapons to previous. this is helpful for rocket launcher to shotty. or shotty to chain gun for medic

'E' is use

mousewheel up and down is jump

sabout it for me

what im struggling with is landing concs and basically losing all momentum. maybe spoofer or DS could teach me how to continue from that like brah does. unless thats chopping. brah basically teleports from entrance to 1st floor its so unfair.

and now that i have a mechanical keyboard sometimes ill be chaingunning an sg down and accidentally hit the menu (tab I think) and it basically locks my firing down. similar to when you hold tab to mute someone. the clicking action of muting someone fires the gun and it just doesnt stop until you go back into that screen that shows players.

@gg#4, when you say two-click grenades, you mean you have two buttons on the mouse that you use for your nades? What do you mean mouse 3 gets you to your default?

What is the advantage of mouse wheel for jumping? I hear it can help with bunny hopping if you have the right script. It seems like it could interfere with clicking to fire.

I have I believe it's j or k set to "detdispenser."

I have a two button mouse and experimented with the right button as secondary nade for medic for concing. I like the freedom gained by not having to hold down "g" the default while doing the WASD stuff.

    WASD movement
Mouse4 jump
Shift crouch
CTRL walk
Space primary/secondary weapon toggle
B tertiary weapon
V melee weapon
Mouse1 attack
Mouse5 gren1 double-tap (also throws gren2)
F gren2 double-tap
Mouse2 class special function
Mouse3, C, Z, X, G other class special functions
E use
R discard
Mwheeldown flag toss
CapsLock voice toggle

I can do pretty much all of the above at once.

Control movement with middle three fingers of left hand, crouch or walk with left pinky, jump with right thumb. Switch weapons with left thumb, also handle nades with right thumb. At most I have to take my pointer off right strafe momentarily to prime a secondary nade, hit use, discard, or perform some tertiary class functions, which takes like 1/5th of a second at most. Or take left ring finger off left strafe momentarily to toggle voice comms.

Classic binds, no changes...just learned to adapt.

Mouse1 Fire
Mouse2 Zoom
Mouse3 +voicerecord
F gren1
G gren2
WASD movement
ctrl crouch
spacebar jump
q last weapon ("quick switch")
E use
R reload

Admittedly my hand looks deformed mid-battle while bhopping, shooting, concing, all of the above. But it works for me and I can reliably execute the following without compromise:
-bhop
-strafing / movement / direction changes
-shooting
-reloading
-concing
-voice chat
-grenade priming

I've learned to shift my whole left hand over a key toward the right during complicated multi-finger-task moments to compensate for that shitty ring finger that depends on the middle finger for movement

Never was willing to compromise to change the bindings to fit around me. I always wanted to fit around the game.

And i'll still smoke DS, even on a fresh install

Thanks for the great responses. I know I can find all these configs and binds online, but the additional context really helps.

Learning to work with default settings is an IT mindset I've always held. I'll complain about a crappy user interface, and somebody will say "Just install this program to make things easier!" Ok, so I'll install this program on all 20 operating systems I log into on a weekly basis? No thanks.

click once to prime and click a second time to throw away

mouse 3 brings me to a medikit for medic etc.

i switch to space when firing

but most of the time im just strafing left an right when firing in combat

i use mousewheel for jumping just point a to point b

No sir. No scripts, no fancy anything. Bone stock, since day 1.

I do, however, play guitar, so I'm used to all of my phalange's being busy at some point...so really not a problem for me to do it all the old fashion way. I'm a militant masher of the "r" button as it is, so my auto-reload script is my left pointer finger lol

Gize also plays guitar and also insists on playing with an entirely default setup, though he shifts the binds around a bit to contort his hands in batshit insane ways. I think he still has (or at least had until recently) 'o' or 'p' as his discard key.

Devs offer the ability to change keybinds because they know full well that PC games are complex and require all sorts of input, and want the player to be able to control the game however they feel is best or natural in order to focus on the actual game mechanics instead. TF/TFC/TF2 take it a step further and offer all sorts of additional options via the console to optimize control schemes. It's not like "detdispenser" or "primeone" exist as some sort of oversight that they "forgot" to restrict access to. Rather, they were created entirely for people to bind keys to them.

So if anything, it's those that try to perfect their control scheme the best way possible for each specific user, that are moreso taking advantage of what the devs clearly intended people to make use of. And either way, it's the norm at mid to high level, so when in Rome and all that.

How do you set the nade throwing up like that? When I had it set to my mouse or keyboard I push to prime, then release the button to throw. Is there a script for this? Is there also a way to shorten the priming time?

I don't have the specifics of the grenade binds. But in general, any '+' command has an implicit '-' command when you release the key.

So you can break that up:

alias primegren1 "+gren1"
alias throwgren1 "-gren1"

bind f "primegren1"
bind g "throwgren1"

Tapping 'f' will prime until you then tap 'g' to let it go.

EDIT: I goofed. It seems that in order to actually disassociate the '-' command from the '+' command, you need to use aliases.

two step nade this is how spoofer sent me. i changed it so its mouse5 and mouse4. this first aliases gren1 to trigger throwgren and primeone via the semicolon and gren2 to trigger throwgren and primetwo. the last part is where you bind gren1 and gren2 to a key.

alias gren1 "throwgren; primeone"
alias gren2 "throwgren; primetwo"
bind mouse5 "gren1"
bind f "gren2"

auto-reload this binds it to your movement keys in this scenario its WASD. So any time you hit a movement key WASD it reloads as well as moves you

alias reloadWeapon "+reload; wait; -reload"
alias +forwardReload "+forward; reloadWeapon"
alias -forwardReload "-forward; reloadWeapon"
alias +backReload "+back; reloadWeapon"
alias -backReload "-back; reloadWeapon"
alias +moveleftReload "+moveleft; reloadWeapon"
alias -moveleftReload "-moveleft; reloadWeapon"
alias +moverightReload "+moveright; reloadWeapon"
alias -moverightReload "-moveright; reloadWeapon"
bind w "+forwardReload"
bind a "+moveleftReload"
bind s "+backReload"
bind d "+moverightReload"
