Just to hear "Countess" or "Black Metal" live
As Illusion put it so eloquently years ago.. Venom weren't great musicians... But lyrically... | | Yeah, most of your late 70's early 80's metal/black metal bands, starting out, weren't great musicians.
Venom was in a league of their own. Big stage show, loud AF, the lyrics. I think Mantas was the only real musician in the band. Cronos just had that stage presence and Abaddon could beat the shit out of his drums, but I wouldn't put him in a top tier of drummers.
Still, they were new, they were dark and they were heavy.
Cronos, though, suffered from the Blackie Lawless, Axl Rose syndrome...chronically late, or sometimes would play a couple songs, not feel it and walk off. That's one reason I didn't get to a Venom show...the other was they never seemed to come inland much...always the east coast.
Venom Inc was in Detroit in 2018, but I don't remember why I couldn't go. I think they'd be spot on, and Tony Dolan does justice to the original material. Plus, they're probably a lot more punctual than Cronos. | |
